Ligno (for Dru)

Look up, human. While you’re stuck in your head,
In your thoughts, in your office, or asleep in your bed,
In your car, at your desk, or annoyed in a queue -
Life is happening all around you.
Rhythms and cycles move to their dance,
Starch laden leaves flame, and take their chance
In crisp Autumn sunlight to wither and fall
They can’t and won’t wait for your pleasure at all.
The earth is divesting itself as it should
Before frozen breath comes to perish the wood,
To sharpen the air, to strip bare the trees –
The burdens of bloom shed ahead of the freeze.
Look up and you’ll see this all around you.
The beauty is there, if hid in plain view
Inhale it, absorb it; if your year’s made you tired
Release your burdens. Be happy. Be inspired
