Through gauzy walls I hear them at this time of year
Their voices louder now, in this season
They speak softly still, no reason to roar,
No need to shout, nothing in them to fear.
Their words are not what you’d think, unless you buy into
The gaudy, cheap ephemera they inspire. No wraithful warnings,
No terrifying visions, they clink chains to gain your attention,
So you can hear their sense above the distractions you
Fill your life with. They have stood where you stand,
Seen what you see, felt what you feel; nothing is new or
Surprising to them. For that brief blink they breathed.
They remember, they regret, and they understand.
Don’t run away - stop, squint, strain like mad
To hear. Stand here and now and open your heart
And mind. Your days are finite. They come to remind you
That you are loved, that they are you. Live and be glad
